Student Visa - General

The Australian government operates an overseas student program also called "The Overseas Student Visa Program" that enables non-Australian residents to study in Australia.

The number of weeks of study in an academic year must not be less than 36.

Student (Temporary) (Class TU) visa subclass consists of:

  • 570 Independent ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for overseas students) sector
  • 571 Schools sector
  • 572 Vocational Education and Training sector
  • 573 Higher Educational sector
  • 574 Masters and Doctorate sector
  • 575 Non-award Foundation/ other sector

An application for a student visa is an application to study within a particular education sector in Australia.

570 Independent ELICOS - This visa subclass is for overseas students undertaking a non-award. ELICOS as a stand alone principal course and not as a prerequisite to commence another course (for example degree course).

Students are assessed against criteria for this category and the standards linked to the particular assessment level applicable to the visa subclass and nationality (assessment levels 1-5)

571 School sector - This visa subclass is for overseas students undertaking a primary school or a secondary school level course, including both junior and senior secondary school, or their principal of study. Applicants for this subclass that are AL 3, 4 or 5 are required under Schedule 2 to be of an age appropriate to the entry level for their principal course (no more than 18 months younger or older than the average age for that entry level).

572 Vocational Education and Training - This visa subclass is for overseas students seeking to undertake as their principal course, a course leading to the award of a Certificate I, II, III and IV, Diploma, Advance Diploma or Advance Certificate.

573 Higher Education - This visa subclass is for overseas students seeking to undertake as their principal course, a course leading to the award of an Associate Degree, Bachelor Degree, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma.

574 Masters and Doctorate - This visa subclass is for overseas students seeking to undertake as their principal course, a course leading to the award of a Masters degree by course work or by research or a Doctorate degree.

575 Non-award Foundation Studies/ other - This visa subclass is for overseas students seeking to undertake as their principal course, a foundation, bridging or other course (other than an ELICOS) that does not leas to the award of a degree, diploma or other formal award.

A student visa can be granted only to a genuine applicant who meets at least the minimum standards applicable to their subclass assessment level.

Students applying offshore under Assessment levels 3, 4 and 5 must provide a letter of offer before obtaining an E-CoE (confirmation of the enrolment) Certificate from the education provider.

Steps to be followed:

  1. Obtain a letter of offer from an education provider.
  2. Apply for the student visa before confirming enrolment and paying tuition fees.
  3. If the assessment is positive the applicant will be advised to pay the tuition fee and confirm the enrolment.
