Student Visa - India

Student applicants from India are placed into Student Visa Country Assessment Level 3 and must satisfy immigration officers that they are seeking to enter and stay in Australia for the purpose of study and will abide by visa conditions. The Migration Regulations prescribe the evidentiary standards that an applicant must meet to show they are a genuine student with regard to financial capacity, English language proficiency and other requirements.

When assessing the financial capacity of the Student Visa Applicant, the decision maker will take into consideration all family unit members regardless of whether they intend to accompany the Student to Australia.

Tuition and education costs are indicated by the Australian Education Institution in the "Offer of Place" letter.

  • School costs for all school age dependants (above 5 years of age) are predetermined at AUD $8,000.00 per annum.
  • Living costs for student and family members are predetermined at AUD $12,000.00 per year if the student applicant is unaccompanied. If the student has a spouse (even if not a visa applicant) the basic figure of $12,000.00 increases by 35%.
  • A further 20% of the $12,000.00 living costs is added for the first child, if any, even if not a visa applicant.
  • Travel costs to and from Australia for each person included in the application must be included in the assessment of financial capacity.

Funds from an acceptable source means one or more of the following:

  • money on deposit in a bank or financial institution that the applicant, or person providing support to the applicant, has held for at least 3 consecutive months before the application;
  • a loan from a financial institution;
  • a loan from the government of the applicant country, or
  • a scholarship from the proposed educational provider or corporation.

In relation to English language proficiency, the applicant must give evidence that they will undertake an English language intensive course for overseas students (ELICOS) of no more than 30 weeks duration before commencing his or her principle course, or they achieved, in an IELTS test, that was taken less than 2 years before the date of application, an Overall Band Score of at least 5.0.

In relation to other requirements, the Applicant must give evidence that he or she has successfully completed secondary schooling to the Year 12 level, or its equivalent (must provide school reports and academic records).
